Safe and Sound Protocol

Listen your way into connection, safety, and exploration!

Your child can only learn, enjoy life and socially engage when their nervous system is flexible, open, and ready

The safe and sound protocol (SSP) is a science-suppose listening program where filtered music is used to open up the nervous system to create a sense of safety and learning. This is a deeply transformative experience that helps with anger, social disconnection, and sensitivities to sensory experiences.

What is the Science behind the SSP?

Those who experience trauma, anxiety, or autism often develop a nervous system that gets stuck in the stress response cycle. When they are in this state it is hard for them to enjoy life, learn, and connect to others.

The music replicates the calming frequencies of a mother’s voice which is deeply nurturing and relaxing. The cues of safety in the music help to break the stress-response cycle and retune the nervous system for better regulation.

What does it look like to participate in the SSP?

The SSP is delivered through headphones, under the guidance of a trained professional. This service can be done remotely with a parent present, or in person out in nature. As professionals, we partner with UNite ILS to provide your child with one or more of five available music programs that is delivered to an app on your own device. Each pathway is a total of 5 hours, and it is up to the clinician as to how the music is titrated for best results. The accelerated program is 5 days in a row with 60 minutes sessions and then 30 minutes of integration time with the therapist. It could take weeks or months depending on how your child is processing the music. It works best when the program is completed consecutively at roughly the same time each day. This requires high caregiver involvement to help co-regulate through this dynamic process. The parent is asked to monitor progress and connect with the therapist to note any changes after each session.

The process includes:

  • A discovery call to determine fit
  • A 60-minute intake call to complete assessments and set up your program
  • Ongoing support- multiple 30-minute calls throughout the program
  • Professional monitoring of daily routine check-ins on shared files or email

We’re pleased to offer two options:

Option 1: Therapist and child ( or adult) starts at $800
Option 2: Therapist, child and Parent – starts at $1,300

Neuroscience shows that our brains are wired for connection, especially between children and parents. This is a great way to reduce response triggers and recalibrate your nervous system while caring for your child.

How can my child benefit from the SSP?
By following this program your child will notice a reduction of the following:

  • Lower levels of frustration
  • Hyperactivity/ADHD
  • Aggressive behaviors (biting, yelling, hitting)
  • Challenges with social engagement
  • Sensitivity to or misperception of sounds and voices
  • Shutting down, withdrawal, people-pleasing or disengagement
  • Anxiety/Phobias
  • Difficulty staying on task or paying attention

What are the outcomes of the SSP?

While some clients report that they see changes immediately, some occur over the course of several weeks after the program. Some clients have reposted these results after completing the program.

  • Overall emotional stability
  • Improved communication skills
  • Improves ability to initiate and complete tasks
  • Ability to show pleasure and enjoyment in social situations
  • Improved toileting and report of stomach pains
  • Fewer escalations of negative behaviors
  • Reduced recovery time from big emotions.
